Marble & Onyx Cremation Urn Buying Guide

A few practical things worth knowing before choosing an urn to honor a loved one

LaOnyx Marble Ashes Urn

Choosing an urn is rarely a decision made in a hurry. This guide covers the practical questions - sizing, how the lid seals, which finishes are available, and whether a stone urn belongs indoors or outside - so the choice is easier when it matters.

1. Sizing for standard adult ashes

Our Marble Ashes Urn measures approximately 7" long by 7" wide by 8" high, sized to hold standard adult cremated remains. If a crematory has provided the exact weight or volume of the remains, it is worth double-checking against those numbers before ordering, particularly for a larger-than-average adult.

Practical tip:

When in doubt about sizing, ask the funeral home or crematory directly - they can tell you the volume of remains in cubic inches, which is the most reliable way to confirm an urn will hold everything.

2. How the lid seals

Look for a well-fitted lid that sits securely rather than one that rattles or shifts when moved - ours is designed to keep contents safely and respectfully enclosed. Handle the lid gently when placing or removing it, and avoid dropping or jarring the urn.

3. What we build ours around

Our own Marble Ashes Urn is handcrafted from solid natural stone with a smooth, polished finish, and comes in six finishes - White, Black, Green Onyx, White Onyx, Verona, and Oceanic. Because each piece is cut from natural marble or onyx, veining and tone vary slightly from one urn to the next, so no two are quite identical.

4. Indoors, outdoors, or both

Solid marble and onyx are naturally weather-resistant, so a stone urn is suited to display on a mantel or shelf at home just as well as placement in a memorial garden, columbarium niche, or family plot. If it will spend time outdoors, wipe away rain or condensation promptly rather than letting moisture sit on the surface.

5. Keeping it looking new

Dust with a soft, dry cloth and avoid leaving liquids in contact with the surface for extended periods, since marble is porous and can stain. See our marble care guide for the full routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size cremation urn do I need for an adult?

Standard adult cremated remains typically require around 200 cubic inches of capacity. Our Marble Ashes Urn measures approximately 7" long by 7" wide by 8" high, sized for standard adult ashes - if you are unsure, ask the crematory for the exact weight or volume of the remains before ordering.

Is a marble urn only for indoor display?

No - solid marble and onyx hold up outdoors as well as they do on a shelf, which is why we list this piece under outdoor-suitable pieces too. It works equally well as a home memorial on a mantel or shelf, or placed in a memorial garden, columbarium niche, or family plot.

How securely does the lid stay closed?

It uses a well-fitted lid designed to keep the contents safely and respectfully enclosed. As with any urn, avoid dropping or jarring it, and handle the lid gently when placing or removing it.

What finishes are available?

The Marble Ashes Urn comes in six finishes: White, Black, Green Onyx, White Onyx, Verona, and Oceanic - each piece is cut from natural stone, so veining and color will vary slightly from one urn to the next.

How do I clean and care for a marble urn?

Dust it gently with a soft, dry cloth and wipe away any moisture promptly rather than letting it sit - marble is porous and can stain if liquids (including rain, if displayed outdoors) are left standing on the surface. See our marble care guide for the full routine.
